Plug (Terminator) Types

Below is a list of the common plug types there are generally used to connect a speaker cable to an amplifier and speakers. All types listed are available at Audio Cable Pro on the speaker cables that we produce. If your unable to find the cable that you prefer with the plugs (terminators) that you prefer, please contact us and we can make speaker cables to a custom length and using the terminators of your choice.

Standard (4mm) Banana Plug

Standard gold plated banana plugs

The 4mm banana plug is the most common size, compatible with most speaker terminals and amplifiers available. These connectors create secure connections for high-power applications, typically handling 10-15 amperes and voltages up to 60V.

The design of the plug allows for quick connect and disconnect while maintaining excellent electrical properties.  They are available in both Gold Plated and Rhodium plated.

The spring-loaded metal contact expands inside the jack, providing a snug fit that enhances conductivity and prevents accidental disconnections. This mechanical pressure creates a large contact surface area between the plug and jack, minimizing electrical resistance and maximizing signal integrity.

Spade Plugs

Spade plugs offer large surface area contact with binding posts and can be screwed down firmly for a highly stable connection, minimizing resistance and the risk of accidental disconnection.

Spade banana plugs are engineered to handle significant current loads—specifications, for instance, include ratings like 15A and 1000V, matching the demands of high-powered audio systems.

Spade plugs can be used to attach to the binding post on both the amplifier and speakers. They are available in both Gold Plated and Rhodium plated.

Bent Pin Plug

Gold plated bent pin connector

Bent pin plugs can be used on both a binding post or the Push Terminal connectors found on small older style speakers.

They are available with Gold Plating and can be used on both ends of the speaker cable or one end in conjunction with standard or spade plugs.

Bent pin banana plugs are preferred when installation space is limited or when cables need to be routed cleanly without sticking out directly from the socket, reducing strain and potential damage to wires and improving overall equipment organization.

Lockable/Stackable Plug

Gold plated locking stackable banana plug

Lockable and Stackable plugs are a great choice. They offer a screw fitting that when tightened expands the leaves inside the binding post preventing them from coming out and offering a super snug fit. Another advantage these plugs have is that the cable side exits instead of directly out of the rear of the plug.

This design greatly enhances conductivity and prevents disconnections. The rear of the plug can be jacked by another banana plug. Making it easy to connect jumpers or even other speakers. Available in both Gold and Rhodium plated. These are a little more expensive but are a fantastic banana plug.

Here's an example of a binding post. Typically found on the rear of your speaker. This is where you would connect your speaker cables to your speaker.
